Peace on Earth/We Got to Make it Somehow

We are Everywhere GD60

Inspired by one of Tessie’s first dead shirts bought on the lot in the late 80’s. She redesigned the shirt and added a back design!! All hand drawn and made in celebration of Grateful Dead 60th anniversary!!

From my interview with @vocalcharismatics about the original lot shirt:

My favorite shirt is a lot shirt I scored on Grateful Dead summer tour. It’s a faded dyed pink shirt with a hand drawn/ painted sun and peace sign around the earth. It reads Peace on Earth, Got to make it somehow. This pink peace shirt feels feminine and kind. Hopeful. The shirt includes a lyric from the song ““Comes a Time”, when the blind man takes your hand, says don’t you see? Gotta make it somehow on the dreams you still believe.”

The dead lot has always been a place of shared love and creativity for this magical band. I bought shirts from the heart, with an artists eye. I didn’t buy the “bangers”, I didn’t buy the shirts I knew I could resell. I didn’t buy the concert shirts, from inside the venue.. the legit ones… I only bought from heads in the parking lot. While thinking about this shirt and where it came from for this interview I did a search for it. Thinking it’s really one of a kind, I found another one from a vintage seller afterglow in NY, which blew my mind. So the artist could be from that area.. but I went on summer tour from 88’-95’ seeing Jerry’s last show. I can only intuit it was from 88-89. I can only intuit this was a woman artist on tour. It could be from anywhere because we are everywhere.

I’ve been into fashion and art since I was young. A shirt should make the person wearing it feel good, like any great clothing garment. But the t-shirt has really become an art piece. I love hand drawn fucked up expressive vibes. I love the effects of time and effort visibly seen on a shirt. I love to see an artists take on their passion for a place, a band, a cause. I love punk rock ripped and worn things.

After wearing this shirt for 37 odd years it has that paper thin feeling.. with a couple holes here and there. It’s on a Hanes shirt. Feels classic. The second one I found is less worn, still a couple holes, Hanes tag. I can see how the person screened the words and main imagery but then colored it in by hand with markers probably while on tour. Mine has more painted detail And some glitter paint. I’m stoked to have two of these now. I can imagine a person sitting on a blanket in the parking lot working on coloring these in while selling them.
